Golden

Thomas Preston: "Golden."

Initial concept:

GOLDEN NOTE: The full mask is the final version. We first see the costume in the last page of issue one, as Thomas Preston decides he finally needs to do something about Silver Bay's out of control heroes and villains.

Cast Designs

The Silver Bay Protectors & Heroes

MAXIM

"Maxim- team leader, suit gives him strength, flight. Something similar to Guardian from Alpha Flight, whose costume had micro-circuitry that gave him powers."

MAXIM NOTE: Maxim puts out the call to figure out "Golden's" true identity in an attempt to control his "fellow" hero.

BLUR

"Blur- wears hydraulic 'boots' that give super-speed. Maybe they are kind of big and clunky looking, while rest of suit is very sleek and aerodynamic, like a cyclist or speed-skater."

BLUR note: It is Blur who first realizes that "Golden" possesses true super powers, unlike the rest of Silver Bay's heroic population. When she and Golden end up in they Bay, her boots short out and the weight carries her to the bottom. With little effort, Golden saves her from drowning, and she realizes he carries no mechanical or science-based tech to assist him.

AJAX
"Ajax- our super-soldier. Lots of weapons and gadgets, skilled marksman. Tough and grizzled, a cynical Captain America."

AJAX note: Ajax and Blur are the first heroes we meet in the opening scene of GOLDEN #1, as they battle the villain PLYMOUTH ROCKET.

STEALTH

"Stealth- a winged hero that’s a sort of human stealth bomber, using that flight mask you designed. A sort of Hawkman meets Iron Man maybe?"

Stealth is the hero who pursues the villain that destroys the building in which Thomas Preston works in issue one. Stealth is not a member of the Silver Bay Protectors, and remains a bit of a mystery.

"I was going for an androgynous look to keep his/her sex unidentifiable. I'd like to keep working on that, as it's still a little too manly. I was thinking a lot of black/grey leather."

DREAMER

"Dreamer- A juggernaut…Huge mechanical hands, head, and feet, with the body being made up of a sort of living gel or plasma. Floating in the gel is a sleeping man (or woman) in the fetal position. He’s the team powerhouse."

"...messing with the idea of Dreamer being something like a Lovecraftian monster; just a parasitic blob that can mold itself into whatever it wants to. That's what I was going for in design "B". Maybe we can use both designs though? "A" could be the version its host has control over it; the mechanical parts acting like a control mechanism, but if those parts are damaged or removed, the parasite reasserts control and becomes dangerous to everyone, even the members of its own team"

"I like all of this thinking, and I've been kind of kicking around how we might incorporate Stephen's parasitic blob into our non super powered universe. It takes some long-range thinking, but I like the notion of meeting Dreamer in the A design, as a member of the team, and then having this scene (after the appearance of Golden) where, out of nowhere, the "blob" breaks loose and attacks the team. Seth and I have been kicking around the notion that our boy was once part of a slightly larger mythos..."Golden Age" heroes with real powers, that seems to have vanished in the ensuing years. When Golden appears, he seems to have knocked something loose, and cracked open the door that would lead to a return of weirdness. With that in mind, I think we should tie Dreamer to a Golden Age hero (of our own invention), and Golden's reappearance has released this "Lovecraftian blob" that's been gestating inside the current Dreamer (the granddaughter of the original hero...who should maybe have been Lovecraftian and maybe Victorian in design and concept). Kind of a complex plot thread, but I'm all for giving this book that kind of resonance. Something well-planned and deeper than most."

VILLAINS

"Pyre - human flamethrower."

"Pyre - I was playing with a ballerina look. It's still early in the design and I still haven't gotten the tutu right, but the idea of her dancing around while setting people on fire seemed interesting, if not outright disturbing ;)"
